Back to School Fashion
August 16, 2015
For teens, the first day back at school is the most important day in the fashion calendar—and thanks to teenage style influencers like Kendall Jenner, Tavi Gevinson and Jaden Smith, even adults can learn a thing or two from the wardrobe decisions the under-20s will soon be making.
Here’s a guide to back-to-school style, brought to you by The Mall at Millenia and today’s teen style icons.
Kendall Jenner hasn’t just mastered the off-duty model look, she’s breathed new life into it. Signatures of her style include head-to-toe black, statement belts, deconstructed tailoring and skinny jeans—all ideal components of a low-key, on-trend first-day-of-school look, and all available at the best mall in Orlando. Jenner wears her jeans so skinny they look sprayed on—like Lucky Brand’s Brooke legging jeans, which are made of ultra-luxe Italian denim and have a super-skinny leg opening. This spring and summer, K.J. has been pairing hers with ankle boots just like Forever 21’s stacked-heel Chelsea boots. Add Diesel’s Berisi belt—Jenner has a wardrobe full of belts just like it—and a Project Social T Double-V Cami in black, from Urban Outfitters. Kendall is known for sprinkling her outfits with leather and even pleather, and for mixing tailoring with dressed-down looks, so finish with a fitted jacket with faux leather details from H&M.
If your look is more indie chick than runway babe, Tavi Gevinson is the one to watch. Once the youngest and most inventive fashion blogger on the planet, Tavi is now nothing less than a feminist icon. Her style has matured, too: gone are the fluffy pompoms and blue hair, in favor of chicly demure high waists and necklines, bright prints, and always, always white sneakers. Start with some classic Adidas women’s Superstar sneakers, available at Journeys—Tavi’s been seen wearing much-loved Adidas kicks a few times—and add Gap’s pleated, high-waisted skirt. Armani Exchange’s tie-front blouse is Tavi all over, from the playful print to the high, buttoned neckline to the cute, retro tie front.
Over in menswear, the undisputed king of teen fashion today is Jaden Smith, who was recently named one of GQ’s “most stylish men alive.” Smith’s style is defined by daring, and that only occasionally involves wearing a dress. For a more high school-friendly nod to Smith’s style, look to the way he puts together hiphop-style big shoes and baggy clothing with sharp, tailored, even skintight items. Get the silhouette with Hollister’s super skinny jeans, Sk8-hi slim-zip shoes by Vans (with Jaden’s signature leopard-print lining) and a baggy graphic tee—Urban Outfitters has a great selection, including the pictured beauties: Midnight Wolf by Body Rags, Transcendence by Design by Humans, and the ribcage tank top by Deter. Jaden’s all about the blazers, too, and H&M has a broad selection, including this style in laid-back jersey. Buy a couple of sizes up for Jaden’s signature oversized look. And if you’re feeling really adventurous, top the look off with a little more leopard print, with Hollister’s classic backpack.
All these looks and more await you at your favorite Orlando mall. Is the summer over yet?
