Guide to Perfect Summer Skin and Makeup
July 28, 2015
Backstage at the Spring/Summer 2015 shows, makeup artists everywhere could be heard talking about “natural” and “minimal” looks. In fact, makeup was the only area to show a strong trend across designers in the whole of an otherwise scattered season, and that trend was for keeping it real. In a particularly revolutionary move, Marc Jacobs sent his models onto the catwalk completely makeup-free, and at Proenza Schouler there was nothing but concealer to be seen.
This might sound like both good and bad news. After all, the only thing more liberating than a bare face is the ability to cover it up if you feel the need. This summer’s makeup naturals give you the best of both worlds—the lightness of naked skin and the lightening, brightening, perfecting power of the very best, most subtle makeup. At The Mall at Millenia, we’ve picked some of our favorite barely-there makeup products, as well as skincare to give you the perfect glowing base. Welcome to your guide to summer skin, courtesy of your favorite mall in Orlando, Florida.
The first port of call if you’re going for a light, natural makeup scheme is a great exfoliator. L’Occitane’s Imortelle Brightening Instant Exfoliator is a beauty classic: a gel that becomes a soft milk as you rinse it, it contains daisy extract to give your skin a shimmery luminosity and even tone, and immortelle, an essential oil with unique anti-aging properties.
Next up, you’ll need a great moisturizer with a high SPF. Shiseido’s White Lucent Brightening Protective Emulsion, with an SPF of 18, is a miracle worker: it’s lightweight and fast-absorbing, with targeted vitamin C and M-tranexamic acid to even pigmentation and support natural cell turnover. And those with pimple-prone skin report that it doesn’t have the breakout-inducing qualities of other moisturizers that contain SPFs. It’s available from Sephora, here at The Mall at Millenia, along with a range of other white lucent products.
Many dermatologists recommend applying a facial sunscreen over your SPF moisturizer—you can’t be too careful when it comes to sun wrinkles and even worse effects of UV rays, especially in sunny Florida. Also at Sephora, you’ll find Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare’s Sheer Mineral Sun Spray in SPF 50, a true cult product that has women all over the US raving. It’s non-greasy and leaves no residue as well as being water-resistant and super easy to apply.
Next up on your Florida shopping trip: foundation. Summer foundation can be tricky, and a light touch is essential. On the Spring/Summer catwalks, makeup artists kept it dewy; matte finishes are a thing of the past. With these pointers in mind, a tinted moisturizer is often the best way to go in summer. The market for tinted moisturizers has exploded in recent years, with BB and CC creams added to the fold, but you still can’t beat Laura Mercier, the French makeup artist whose trademark is the “flawless face.” Her Tinted Illuminating Moisturizer with SPF 20 will give you a healthy glow as well as evening your skintone. Available at Neiman Marcus, here at The Mall at Millenia.
To complete an on-trend, barely-there makeup look for Spring/Summer 2015, add a pale, shimmery lipstick and the subtlest of eye accents. MAC has both these bases covered, and then some: in one of the most exciting beauty collaborations of the season, Italian couture designer Giambattista Valli has created some new MAC lipstick shades, and the results are untouchably elegant and feminine. For dark skin tones, there’s Eugenie, a sumptuous matte dark cherry hue with blue undertones. Our favorite of the lighter tones is pale white-pink Bianca B, which will give an almost ethereally healthy finish to a lightly sunkissed face. Add a slick of MAC’s Pro Longwear water-resistant eyeliner, guaranteed to stay put for 12 hours even on sticky summer days, and you’re good to go.
