Summer Trend: How To Wear White
July 1, 2015
Rules are made to be broken, and the old line about not wearing white after Labor Day is no exception—anyone who knows anything about winter coats can attest to that. But bright white is especially glorious in the summer months, when it can set off a tan and keep you cool while looking impeccably stylish.
It’s also one of the most versatile looks there is. Worn head to toe, it’s the most elegant way to make a statement—just ask Sienna Miller, Beyoncé, Chloë Sevigny or any of the other celebrities who’ve been whiting out the red carpet at awards shows in recent years. For daytimes, the key to all white is in the details: the tonal purity really makes them pop, and they can add character and stop your outfit from looking austere. Saint Laurent’s white lace tube dress marries the trend with one of French Vogue’s top 20 looks for summer 2015: romantic lace. The cap sleeves and boatneck—not to mention the color—bring the pretty lace right up to date. Pair it with Prada’s slip-on leather sneakers in white and chrome for a funky, low-key summer daytime look, or with Saint Laurent’s own bow sandals in dove-white leather to carry the outfit into evening.
For a more casual take on head-to-toe white, ditch dresses for separates. This summer’s most coveted silhouette is a full, high-waisted skirt teamed with a crop top. Armani Exchange has a white, high-waisted full skirt with a semi-sheer, perforated overlay, casual pockets and big, beautiful box pleats. Add a scalloped crop top with artful cutouts and a criss-cross bodice, also by Armani Exchange, for the perfect on-trend summer look.
A splash of white can also brighten a dark or richer-hued outfit. For years now, the British style icon Alexa Chung has been proving how much mileage can be had from a classic tote bag. Gucci’s tote in sumptuous, buttery off-white leather is a simple but infinitely elegant way to work white into a casual summer outfit.
If white is a spectrum unto itself, you’ll find a classic leather tote at one end, and at the other Audrey Hepburn in oversized white sunglasses and pearls, hands-down the most glamorous iteration of the look. Chanel’s line of metal and plexiglass rings adds a modern twist to timeless pearls: they’re classic, even pretty, and yet sleek and no-nonsense. Pair with a simple black dress and Versace’s oversized white #PopMedusa sunglasses for a full complement of white accents à la Hepburn.
It’s easy to overlook this purest of shades, but for those in the know it’s one of the best weapons in the wardrobe. Coco Chanel said it herself: “Women think of all colors except the absence of color. I have said that black has it all. White too. Their beauty is absolute.”
