BUGGIN’ OUT: ROBOTIC INSECTS INVADE
THE MALL AT MILLENIA THIS MAY 27-JUNE 26
ORLANDO, FL (April 22, 2005) – Enormous bugs will descend on The Mall at Millenia this May 27th through June 26th -- but no need to bring the repellent. A caterpillar, dragonfly, honeybee, locust, mosquito, praying mantis, stick insect and fighting beetles will swarm during Buggin’ Out at The Mall at Millenia, a month-long special event featuring gigantic robotic insects and fun activities for the entire family. The larger-than-life exhibit will give guests a clear observation of the behaviors and adaptations that have helped insects survive through the ages. Admission is free to Buggin’ Out at The Mall at Millenia and is sponsored by Land Rover Orlando, Valley Crest Companies and The Home Depot.
The huge insects on display inside the Center’s Grand Court will be a spectacular blend of art and science. A nineteen-foot praying mantis shows the threatening behavior that forces its prey to freeze in an attempt to avoid being eaten. A thirteen-foot locust spreads its mighty wings to take flight while two eleven-foot rhinoceros beetles battle each other. A giant walking stick insect, over twenty-one feet long, displays its protective camouflage, and a fifteen-foot long swallowtail butterfly caterpillar wiggles and moves. Kokoro of California, creator of 2004’s popular dinosaur exhibit at The Mall at Millenia, is the force behind this year’s creepy crawler showcase.
In addition to the robotic insects, living ladybugs and butterflies will be presented by the Orlando Science Center (OSC). OSC is also providing insect-themed activities for children and will take place in the Orangerie Cafés on Fridays, 5 pm to 8 pm; Saturdays from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm; and on Sundays from 12 noon to 3 p.m., beginning Friday May 27th and concluding on Sunday, June 26th. Children will also be able to pick up a fun activity sheet at the Mall’s full-service concierge that can later be redeemed for a take-away gift.
