Pamper Your Feet This Fall
September 2, 2015
Reason #865 that it’s fun to live in a tropical climate: sandals aren’t just for summer. Since we can wear them almost year-round, we Floridians have the unusual luxury of making these normally seasonal items a cornerstone of our wardrobes. And as Orlando’s prime luxury-shopping destination, The Mall at Millenia can help you assemble a weapons-grade footwear collection for balmy climes.
Platforms, wedges and textures of the seventies revival have been huge news in footwear for spring/summer 2015, and they’re set to continue in the limelight for autumn/winter. Salvatore Ferragamo combines all three in a truly iconic package: the platform wedge thong sandal, in grey-and-white crocodile print, with a chunky stacked heel and an ankle strap. This classic Ferragamo shape—which recalls the early, iconic style the Rainbow wedge—is also available in black, in the platform wedge sandal.
As you might expect, the designers at Brazil’s high-fashion footwear brand Carmen Steffens are geniuses when it comes to open and open-toed styles. Most places around the world, the open boot is a beautiful but useless thing, worn only during the two-week window of pleasant weather between summer and winter. If you live in Florida—or Brazil—you’re lucky to be in the select crowd that can really invest in the most fashion-forward footwear style to emerge in recent years. Carmen Steffens’s Antonella model is an instant classic; its black-crystal detailing could be dressed down with a rock-chic look or up for evening elegance.
Meanwhile, lace-up sandals are still on-trend, as proven by their appearance on the spring/summer 2015 catwalks at Valentino, Chloé and Stella McCartney, to name but a few. Gucci brings us a quintessentially luxe Gucci take on the style with Heloise leather sandals, with oh-so-delicate fine-leather ties, a golden heel and soft mink pom poms.
Jimmy Choo has long been the global go-to for teetering heels, but in recent years creative director Sandra Choi has been working hard on the beloved brand’s flats, and nowhere is this more evident than in their summer collections. Wyatt—available in gold, silver and a soft, black grainy leather with gold details—combines steel-cubed mirror leather with a bejeweled central panel featuring linked metal plates. For a different twist on jeweled sandals, the playful Night in mirror-like silver leather makes a statement with a dazzling crystal motif on the T-bar. Choo also offers a high-fashion take on that perennial summer favorite, the espadrille. Our fave is the neon cubed-leather espadrille in raspberry: the clean, pure shape allows the textural experimentation to sing.
Days that don’t call for neon or foot jewels needn’t leave your toes feeling unloved. Since Birkenstock’s first revival back in the 90s, comfortable sandals have been a matter of high style, not simply good sense—and that’s never been more true than during the current, second explosion of popularity for the German brand. You can head to Bloomingdale’s here at The Mall at Millenia to snap up a pair or two of original Birkies, or experiment with some of the other styles spotted on off-duty models now that comfort is cool. Celeb favorite Donald J. Pliner offers Lyla, a patent-leather sandal with a hip chunky ankle strap and a padded footbed for extra comfort. And fashion editors the world over have spent much of this summer in slides just like ecco’s Dagmar buckle-side sandals.
Your feet work hard; they deserve some love. Come pamper them at The Mall at Millenia.
