Spring into the Season's Beauty Trends
March 9, 2016
Great beauty is in the details: the precisely perfect shade of lipstick, the artfully deconstructed updo, the sweep of bright, street-styled eyeliner that offsets a ladylike look. Updating your beauty palette for the season will help you to get those details right, day after day—and have fun while you’re doing it. Here’s The Mall at Millenia’s guide to the top looks from the spring/summer catwalks.
Bold lip colors for 2016
A neutral face with a bold lip has been a beauty basic for a few years now, and the look’s going nowhere—though some designers are giving it a twist. For the spring/summer shows, Marchesa went for a bright fuchsia: younger and more playful than classic red, but just as sexy. M-A-C—every beauty editor’s first stop for bright colors—has the perfect product: Lipmix, a highly pigmented cream that pops like nothing else, which you can use alone or in combination to create a signature shade. Magenta and fuchsia are the hues of the season.
Meanwhile DKNY, Zac Posen, Jason Wu, and Oscar de la Renta all stuck to red. Keys to this season’s red lip: avoid previous seasons’ orange shades—aim for scarlet—and make sure the rest of your look isn’t overdone: gently collapsed hair, barely-there foundation, and naked eyes. Your winning shades for spring are Yves Saint Laurent’s Rouge Pur Couture Satin Radiance Lipstick in Rouge Vernis (available at Bloomingdale’s), Tom Ford’s Cherry Lush (available at Neiman Marcus), and Chanel’s Rouge Allure in Pirate (available at Macy’s).
West Coast beach babes
At Tory Burch, Michael Kors, Derek Lam, BCBG, Rodarte, and Altuzarra, models sported dewy, bronzed skin and loose curls. Altuzarra and Derek Lam added an edge to the look with unusual peach tones around the eyes—colors we normally avoid for fear of looking sallow. It turns out, done just right, peach eyes hit the sweet spot between pretty and edgy.
Flawless, dewy skin is the foundation of this look, and it’s best created with a tinted moisturizer or BB cream. Creams of the crop are the Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream from Bare Minerals, with skin-nourishing minerals and a sheer-to-medium, naturally radiant finish, or, to correct any color imperfections, Clinique’s Moisture Surge CC Cream (both available at Sephora).
For those peach eyes, try NARS’ The Multiple multi-use color for eyes, lips, and cheeks in sunkissed Portofino (available at Bloomingdale’s) and Lush’s Dynamic warm peach liquid eyeliner.
Bright blues and greens
Diane von Furstenberg and Monique Lhuillier celebrated springtime with slicks of bright blue and green around the eyes. Blue eyes sparkle against an emerald liner, while bright blue shadows and liners will make brown, green, and hazel eyes sing. Check out M-A-C’s Fluidline gel liner in Blue Fountain and Modern Twist Kajal liner in New Marine, and Lush’s leafy green Healthy eyeliner.
